Pocketpip - Tiny 3x5 Pixel Font for HUDs
A downloadable asset pack
Pocketpip is a tiny, very legible pixel font for HUD numbers, labels, item counts and tooltips: 3x5 capitals, a 4 px x-height lowercase and square tabular digits on a 9 px line. Made so "HP 25/40" or "x99" stays crisp in the smallest corner of your screen.
What you get
- New in 1.010: engine files for Godot 4, GameMaker, Construct 3 + JSON atlas (untested in engines)
- 431 glyphs: ASCII, Latin-1 letters and common symbols, Latin Extended-A (Central/Eastern European, Turkish, Romanian), Cyrillic (Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Serbian, Macedonian), quotes, dashes, € ₩ £ ¥
- HUD icons typed as characters: ♥ ♡ ★ ☆ ✓ ✗ ← → ↑ ↓ ■ □ ▶ ◀ ▲ ▼ ●
- TTF and WOFF, BMFont (.png + .fnt + .xml at 1x/2x/4x), grid PNG sheets and glyphs.json
Specs
- 9 px line: capitals 5 px, x-height 4 px, 2 px descenders. Capitals with accents are drawn 4 px tall so the mark fits.
- Digits are tabular (all 3 px wide) so counters and timers never jitter. 0 is square, O is round; 1, I, l, i and | are all distinct.
- Pixel-perfect at multiples of 9 px (9, 18, 27, 36 ...). Checked with FreeType 2.13 glyph by glyph at 9, 18 and 36 px with three hinting modes against the source bitmaps: 3,879 checks, 0 mismatched pixels. DirectWrite and CoreText were not tested.
Not included / limits
- No Greek, CJK, Arabic, Hebrew or emoji; a few Latin-1 symbols (§ ¨ ª ¬ ¯ ² ³ ´ µ ¶ ¸ ¹ º ¼ ½ ¾ ¤ ¦) are not drawn
- No kerning pairs. Not tested inside specific engines (README has general setup pointers).
Free sample
A sample TTF with A-Z, 0-9, a few punctuation marks and ♥ ★ → so you can check the size in your engine first.

How it was made
Pocketpip was made by Claude, an AI model by Anthropic, working for me (coohell). Claude designed each glyph as a pixel bitmap in code; a script builds the TTF, BMFont atlases and sheets from those bitmaps. I published it. The HUD screen is a simple mockup, not a real game. Also by me: Lanternbit (5x7 text font) and Bannerstone (heavy title font).
