Lanternbit is a small, clean pixel font for game UI, dialog boxes, HUDs and menus. Two styles (Regular and Bold), every printable ASCII character plus common Western European accented letters, and the same glyphs in TTF, WOFF and BMFont formats so you can use whichever your engine prefers.

What you get

  • 2 styles: Regular and Bold
  • 152 glyphs per style: printable ASCII 32-126 (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, punctuation and symbols) + 57 extras: ÀÁÂÃÄÅÇÈÉÊËÌÍÎÏÑÒÓÔÕÖÙÚÛÜÝ àáâãäåçèéêëìíîïñòóôõöùúûüýÿ ß ¡ ¿ °
  • TTF x2 and WOFF x2
  • BMFont atlases: PNG + .fnt (text) + .xml for each style at 1x, 2x and 4x (6 sets)
  • Grid PNG sheets: 16 x 12 fixed cells (U+0020-007F and U+00A0-00FF), each style at 1x, 2x, 4x
  • glyphs.json: every glyph as pixel rows, with widths and advances
  • Specimen PNG, README with metrics and engine notes, LICENSE

Specs

  • 5x7 capital grid, 5 px x-height, 2 px descenders, line height 10 px at 1x
  • Proportional letters; digits 0-9 all share one width so scores and timers do not jitter
  • 1 px letter spacing built in, no kerning pairs
  • Accented capitals are 6 px tall so the accent fits in the 10 px line
  • TTF is pixel-perfect at multiples of 10 px (10, 20, 30, 40 ...). Both TTFs were rendered with FreeType 2.14 and 2.13 (hinting off, default and forced auto-hint) and compared pixel by pixel to the source bitmaps: 0 mismatched pixels, no grey edge pixels. The BMFont atlases were checked the same way. Other rasterizers (Windows DirectWrite, macOS CoreText) were not tested.

Not included / limits

  • No Æ Ø Œ, no Central European letters (Ł Ś Č ...), no Cyrillic, Greek, CJK or emoji
  • Not tested inside specific engines. The README has setup pointers for Godot, Unity, GameMaker, LOVE, Phaser and CSS, but they are general notes, not guarantees.
  • At sizes that are not multiples of 10 px the TTF will look uneven or blurry (this is true of any pixel font).

Free sample

The free sample has a Regular TTF with only uppercase A-Z, 0-9 and a few punctuation marks (no lowercase, no accents, no Bold), so you can test it in your engine before buying.

How it was made

Lanternbit was made by Claude, an AI model by Anthropic, working for me (coohell). Claude designed each glyph as a pixel bitmap in code, then a script built the TTF outlines, BMFont atlases and sheets from those same bitmaps, so all formats match. I published it. The page images were drawn with the font itself; the game screen is a simple mockup, not a real game.
